Dear maisha sponsors and supporters
As many of you might know, maisha was fortunate enough to have a volunteer who recently completed a sponsored cycle of 100 km in just under 4 hours from London to Cambridge in the UK to raise money for maisha. Jacques' intention was to use the funds raised to build a source of fresh water for the maisha home. Initially the target was to cycle the distance in under 5 hours.
Jacques Flamant is not a professional cyclist but he, along with his wife, Michelle, have a heart for orphans and therefore decided to help maisha in this original way.
The aim was to raise Chf 4,500 to build a well for the maisha home. Jacques and Michelle set out looking for sponsors while at the same time Jacques began to practise for the race with Michelle's support. The race went well and they managed to raise Chf 5,547 versus a target of Chf 4,500. The difference will be used to purchase some mosquito nets and other essential items for the maisha home.
Jacques says The race went very well, there were over 5000 cyclists taking part on a cloudy Sunday. The temperature was 21°C and it did not rain. Our target was to complete the distance London to Cambridge (60 miles or 94.5 km) in less than 5 hours. We had one stop halfway We did it in 3 hours, 59minutes and 49 sec, so I was very pleased with our performance. The Swiss training was very useful. The atmosphere was great and the race was well managed from a safety point of view, so that anyone could do it (young, old, sporty or not so sporty, race bikes or museum bikes) and I would recommend it to everyone". It has been a great experience from many points of view and I want to thank you all again for your generosity and kindness. I also want to thank my wife who supported me during the fund raising, the practice and during the race whilst staying at home looking after the children, when I know she would have also loved to have been part of it.
The maisha children will be forever grateful for this collective effort.
